History of Good Friday Walks 1996 - 2020
The custom of having a walk to a Good Friday service began in 1996. The idea originated on a walkout which I think was sometime in 1994 when the late Hilary McNabb, Paul Brunning and I did a walkout, I think in preparation for a walk which Hilary led on 13 November 1994. Walkouts, as any experienced leader will tell you often include conversations which spark future actions and on that walkout Hilary lamented the fact that we no longer had hostel weekends which were a regular occurance when she had joined the club and on the Easter week weekend a main feature of the weekend was attending the Good Friday service in a local Church. Between the three of us we came up with the idea that even if we did not have a weekend break it might be possible to identify a country Church around which a Good Friday ramble might be built. I recalled some time before this that on a walkout I was doing I passed through the grounds of Worth Abbey so it occurred to me that the Benedictine weould be bound to have Easter services. So when I got home I rang the parish priese to Worth Abbey and asked if a walk to his Church on Good Friday would be feasible. He said it certainly would and recommended the Cowdray Arms as a good venue for lunch before the service. So that gave rise to the first of many walks beginning with Good Friday 1996. WE were not act active with cameras in those days as we are in the third decade of the 21st century so we have no photographic record of the first one. but in the notes below I will include links to photographs taken on any walks for which I did receive some.
The morning of Good Friday turned out to be a continuous downpour and I remarked on the way to Victoria that there would probably be only two of us the walk that day but like so many depressing predictions I was proved wrong and when we emerged from the station tat Three Bridges the rain had ceased and there were 27 (yes twenty seven) valiant ramblers withing to join us!! Several of them remarked that they had only come because it was Good Friday and a bit of penance would be in place but the day turned out to a real pleasure and in no way a penance.

For reasons which I cannot remember we did not have a Good Friday walk in 1997 although there was a walk on the programme that year for Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday AND Easter Monday but in 1998 Paul Connolly and I decided that since the 1996 walk had been so successful we should try it again.

When walking out the 1998 walk Paul and I came to the conclusion that this walk might become an annual club event and that we should step back and invite other members to lead on this day. As you will see in the list below several members have don so over the years and the first to step up to the plate was Catherine Scott in 1999. We walked it out with Catherine on New Years day and no fewer than 13 members joined us, more than we get on the qctual Sunday rambles nowadays. We had a photograph of the big group taken in the grounds of Worth bu I have not been able to find it to put it up here.
On the day of the ramble itself 42 members and guests joined us - a record attendance for a single walk at the time and in fact it may still be the all time record.

Following such a good turnout in 1999 we felt that there was scope for having two walks on Good Friday so in 2000 we tried having a long one and a shorter one with both groups meeting up for the service at Worth Abbey. The long walk shown immediately below was one which I had previously walked out without the Worth Abbey interlude and the short Good Friday walk had actually been inspired by my memory of that walkout.

2001 was the most disastrous year for walkers before the onset of the Corona Virus crisis. In 2001 the enemy was Foot and Mouth Disease. There were two Spring Programmes published that year when the first programme had to be abandoned after only two walks and imaginatively replaced by the famous emergency programme produced at short notice by our Ramble List Compiler Paul Connolly. The Good Friday walk from each programmes is shown below.
