 Greetings ramblers,

The long running saga of “improvement works” on the railways shows no sign of abating any time soon. The outward travel details in this programme are what National Rail www.nationalrail.co.uk or TFL www.tfl.gov.uk have currently posted.

 

Although the advisory emails will be sent out for any changes, please also check NR’s site or call them on 0345 48 49 50. This applies for TFL as well; their enquiries number is 0343 222 1234.

 

Saturday rambles. In this programme there are two walks on a Saturday and the dates are 15th and 29th December.

 

Sunday 2nd December Leader: Maria Vaz (OS Explorer 181)

Meet:       Marylebone 0930 for the 0957 train to Chalfont & Latimer (arr                    1028) then change for Metropolitan line at 0936 to Chesham                      (arr 1044)

Lunch:     The White Hart, Whelpley Hill

Tea:          The Generals Arms, Chesham

Distance: 9 mile ramble in the scenic Chiltern countryside; some hills                        including one stile in the afternoon. Expect some muddy                            paths after wet weather. Returning from Chesham. Direct                          Metropolitan services back to Baker Street and Beyond.

Fare:         Oyster card/Freedom Pass options

Sunday 9th December Leader: Robert Slater (Landranger maps 153 & 166)

Meet:       King's Cross 0845 for 0912 to Arlesey (arr. 0950)

Lunch:    The Plume & Feathers, Ickleford

Tea:         The Angel Vaults, Hitchin (Wetherspoons)

Distance:10 miles returning from Hitchin. Couple of muddy fields in                           morning and a gradual slope in afternoon

Fare:        £8.70 return to Arlesey with Network Railcard

                 Arrive in Hitchin Market Square for carol singing at                                   4pm.Culmination of weekend Christmas festival. Mulled wine                     to lubricate voice.

Saturday 15th December Leader: David Crundall (Landranger 168)

Meet:         Liverpool Street 0840 for 0902 train to Kelvedon (arr 0951)                        Train also calls Stratford 0909 - Overground, DLR, and Tube                      connections

Lunch:     The White Hart Hotel, Coggeshall

Tea:          Sun Inn, Feering or Railway Tavern. Both near Kelvedon                           station

Distance: 9 mostly level miles returning from Kelvedon

Fare:        £15.60 Super Off-Peak Day Return with Network Railcard

 

 

Sunday 23rd December Leader: Maurice Hickman (Explorer map 146)

NB There have been important announcements about this walk since the printed Programme was circulated. Please see below

 

Meet:         Due to the engineering works at Victoria the outbound                         journey will be the 1019 from London Bridge, arriving                           Merstham 1048 and NOT Victoria at 1040 for 1105 train to Merstham                              (arrives 1137) as in the printed programme 

                   The train from London Bridge also calls Norwood                                  Junction 1032 and East Croydon 1035. 

Lunch:       Harrow, Whitehill

Tea:           Sun (Wetherspoon), Redhill

Distance:  9 miles, returning from Redhill

Fare:          £7.85 with Network Card

As at 4 December the leader has yet to walk this ramble out again and may have more information to convey to us after he has walked it out. So please visit the website again before aetting out for this walk

 
As the walk involves a steep ascent to the North Downs Way before lunch and a steep descent  afterwards, it would be advisable to bring walking poles if you have them, particularly as the weather has been so wet recently.

Saturday 29th December Leader: John Burbage (Explorer map 161)

Meet:           Blackfriars 0920 for 09.46 train to Denmark Hill (arr. 0957)

                     Please note that, as a very late amendment since the                                printed programme was circulated, the walk  now starts from                      Peckham Rye Station not Denmark Hill. This can be                                  reached from Victoria, Blackfriars, London Bridge and many                      more.

 

                     If more convenient there is the 0936 train from Victoria                              to Peckham Rye arriving 0948.
 
                      Please see below more detail of John's walk;
                      9.5 miles through Victorian parkland, ancient woodland and                       along the Green Chain Walk with some hill
                      There will also be a visit to the disused railway line which                           inspired French impressionist Camille Pissarro and if time                         permits can view his works at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.                         The walk ends at North Dulwich and Herne Hill stations (10                       mins apart) for trains home. The walk will mainly be on                               good paths and tracks but there may be  some                                           muddy sections in the woodlands. 

Lunch:        The Bridge House, Penge. Local independent pub with                               reasonable priced food

Tea:             Possibly at Herne Hill

Distance:    9.5 miles along the Green Chain Walk with some hills mainly

                    on good paths and tracks There may be some muddy                                sections. Ending at North Dulwich and Herne Hill stations                          (10 mins apart)

Fare:            Oyster/Freedom pass/travelcard options.

Sunday 6th January Leader: Antoinette Connolly (Landranger map 177)

Meet:           Angel station for 10.30 prompt start - Northern line and a                          panoply of bus routes from all points of the compass.

Lunch:        Great Eastern food court, Westfield, Stratford. Plenty of                              options.

Tea:             Ledger Building (Wetherspoons), West India Quay

Distance:    8 miles returning from Canary Wharf. Level and mostly firm                        dry surfaces.

Fare:           Oyster/Freedom pass/travelcard options.

Meet:           London Bridge at 0950 for 1019 train to Ifield (arr. 1117)

Lunch:         Lamb Inn, Lambs Green

Tea:              Jubilee Oak (Wetherspoon), Crawley

Distance:     8 miles, returning from Crawley

Fare:             £12.55 with Network Card

                      Walk is mostly level throughout. Maurice will meet ramblers

                      at Redhill

Meet:             London Bridge 0905 for the 0924 train to Tattenham                                  Corner (arr. 1035) Also train from Victoria at 0933 to East                          Croydon (arr 0949) then change onto the Tattenham Corner

                       train departing at 0956

Lunch:          The Sportsman, Mogador. Selection of medium priced                                dishes and “lite bites”

Tea:               If the kiosk on Tattenham Corner is open, otherwise a pub

Distance:      9 .5 easy miles with no steep hills returning from                                        Tattenham Corner

Fare:             Oyster/Freedom pass/travelcard options.

                      John will meet the train at East Croydon.

Meet:            Blackfriars 0920 for 0942 train to Eynsford (arr 1035)

Lunch:          Lion Hotel, Farningham

Tea:               Dartford

Distance:     9 miles returning from Dartford

                      Fare: 60+ Oyster and Freedom pass holders - single                                  Swanley to Eynsford £1.90 with NSE discount. PAYG                                Oyster holders are best to get a one day paper travelcard                          for zones 1 to 8 as no Oyster card readers on Swanley                              station platforms, then the single ticket above. Dartford is in

                      the travelcard/oyster boundary.

Meet:            Theydon Bois (Central Line zone 6) 1000 for 1015 prompt                        departure. Theydon Bois is approximately 45 minutes                              from  Oxford Circus

Lunch:         Either The Woodbine or The Volunteer, Honey Lane                                   (TQ413998)

Tea:              Possibly the Robin Hood tea hut, or Loughton

Distance:     8.5 miles returning from Loughton. Likely to be very muddy

Fare:             Freedom pass /Oyster/Travelcard options

Meet:           Fenchurch Street 0910 for 0932 train to Benfleet (arr 1015)

Lunch:        The Mayflower, 5 & 6 High Street, Leigh on Sea, (excellent

                    fish  and chips) plus various other options nearby

Tea:             Barge Gladys about 400m before you reach Benfleet station

Distance:    10 miles returning from Benfleet. Some steep hills before

                     lunch, can be muddy and slippery in wet weather

Fare:             £7.20 with Freedom Pass/Oyster card and Senior Rail Card

Sunday 24th February Leader: Kevin MacNamara (OS Landranger 176)

Meet:      Paddington at entrance to Platforms 12, 13 and 14 at 10 15am

               for 10 30am start

Lunch:    Grand Junction Arms, Harlesden or good priced Lebanese                         restaurant, Beit El Zaytoun, close by

Tea:         T he Black Horse, Greenford

Distance:9 level miles returning from Greenford. Option to extend walk

                to Hanwell along the Capital Ring for those who wish. Kevin                      will finish at Greenford

88th Annual General Meeting

At the AGM a secret ballot was held to increase the annual subscription to either £10 or £12. The vote on this was tied, so our president, Father Chris, made the decision at the meeting that the increase should be £12.

 

Yvonne Rowe R.I.P. 

Alan Rowe has reported the sad news that Yvonne Rowe died in September. She had been diagnosed with terminal cancer 6 weeks earlier. Alan and Yvonne both joined the Club in 1960/1961 and married in 1963. They had been living in Darlington for many years. May she rest in peace.

Saturday 15th December Christmas Dinner and Dance

 

 It's that time of year again to let your hair down and enjoy yourself in a nightclub atmosphere at Lowiczanka Restaurant, POSK. 1st Floor,238-246 King Street, London W6 ORF (close to Ravenscourt Tube).The vibrant band with an international flavour will soon get you going.

 

MENU The total cost of the three course meal plus tea/coffee, Christmas crackers and 10% service charge is £32.45. Wine and other beverages are not included. These can be bought on an individual basis from the easily accessible bar. We shall assemble in the foyer at 6.45pm for 7pm. There is a stipulated minimum number of ten people so do come.

Thursday 3rd January Christmas Meal

Hania is organising a Christmas Meal at a cafe called Platform 1 at Clapham Junction to celebrate the 9th day of Christmas. For only £15 this will include a full Christmas dinner and mulled wine. Hania will meet everyone on the concourse of the station at 12.30.

The address of the cafe is 9/10 Bramlands Close.

Holiday in St Ives – 13th ~20th July 2019 (7nights)
