Dear Ramblers

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the committee to one and all. ..

Christmas seems to be here again so soon, and we have some festivities in the club that we hope you will come along to and enjoy.

Christmas Dinner - Saturday 15th December at Brahms Restaurant, Pimlico: Look forward to seeing members who have already booked for this.

Christmas Ramble and Social - Sunday 16th December: Please see the enclosed flyer for details of this and the Ramble List for the walk. We have an additional room this year so hopefully it should build on the success of the social last year, and also we are expecting to
have a better balance between sweet and savoury items. The cost is £5.50 for the buffet - please send your money to Gillian McLauchlan by 10th December. Please see the enclosed flyer for details of this and the Ramble List for the walk.

The AGM - 13 October 2001: We were pleased to have Fr. David, our President of the club, attend the AGM.

We are very sad to see Robert Slater step down from the committee. We thank him for his support; and his wit and wisdom will be sorely missed. We welcome Mike Hoffman back for
a second spell on the committee.

A copy of the minutes is enclosed for  which we are grateful to Dorothy Hickman.

The AGM was followed by the 5.30pm Mass celebrated by Fr. David for the members of SFACRC, and then about 15 members went on to have a meal and a drink at the Masque Haunt, Old Street.

Don't forget your subs:
Subscriptions were due in October and currently still only £4.00. It helps the club funds enormously if you pay on time. Please send your money to Gillian  or you can pay in cash or cheques to any committee members you meet on a walk. As you will see from the enclosed AGM minutes it has been voted to have the subs raised to £5.00 from next year; £50.00 for life
members.

Welcome to new members:
Kay Gaffney, Hoddesdon, Herts EN11. Joseph Elliott, Northwood, Middx HA6. Bill O'Neill, London W9.

Congratulations to life members:
Helen Hunt and Anne Alcock on attaining life membership this year.

DAY OF RECOLLECTION - Sunday, 24th February 2002: We are honoured to have our President, Fr. David Barnes host this for us at St Mary Moorfields Church hall, (see address at top of Committee liat below). Day starts at 11.00am with coffee and tea available on arrival. Fr. David will give a talk at 11.30am and the day will follow the format of previous years. There will be a Mass at 3.00pm and the day will end at 4.00pm approx. Cost is £6.00

There are various lunch options in Liverpool St, Moorgate or Old Street, or you can bring a packed lunch if you prefer. If you would like to attend please send a cheque to Gillian made payable to St Francis - of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club.

Congratulations to Witold Sokolowski on his 40th Birthday on 6th November. Hania and his family had a surprise party for him on Saturday 3rd November which was attended by over thirty SFACRC members.

Obituaries: Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Rena Borg on the death of her brother, Joseph in September. Rena wishes to express her thanks and appreciation to all the members of the club who came to the funeral Mass and sent her sympathy and Mass cards. She has offered six Masses in gratitude.

Our deepest sympathies and prayers also to Christopher McNicholas on the death of his father, and to Monsignor Peter Grant on the death of his sister in Australia.

An Electronic Group: We are going to have a trial of sending the newsletter and programme to people who would like to receive it by email. This has the added benefit of saving the club money in postage. Recipients will need to have Acrobat Reader 4.0 and Word 97 on their computer. If you are interested please email me.

Sunday, 21st October 2001: Due to unforeseen circumstances Frank Bigg was delayed getting to Chelmsford. Apologies to the inconvenience caused to any members turning up for this walk.

Dick Whittington - 6-8 December at Holy Apostles, Pimlico (Cumberland Street). Starting at 7.30pm. Starring Colin Lavender, a member of our club.

Easter at Dorset: Maurice Hickman is organising an YHA awaybreak (Thurs-Mon) at Portland Bill Youth Hostel. For more details phone Maurice on 01737 765231.

Holiday in Poland, May 2002:
Members interested in walking-sightseeing holiday in Poland please come and meet up with Hania at the Royal Festival Hall, 4.00pm on 12th January 2002 to discuss arrangements.

Change of email: Please note in the last column of this newsletter that my (Antoinette's) email has changed.

Y.H.A. Group Membership Card:
The club is in possession of a group membership Y.HA card. Please contact Helen in advance, if you would like to borrow it for hostel weekends in case she is away at the
time you need it.

RAMBLE LIST AND NEWS DECEMBER 2001 - FEBRUARY 2002

COPY DATE FOR THE NEXT PROGRAMME: 20th January 2002

This last twelve months has been a challenging time for the club, firstly with the train disruptions that were the aftermath of the tragic rail crash at Hatfield, and then the  wholesale closure of footpaths as a result of the foot and mouth epidemic. Despite the difficulties presented by these terrible events, we have managed to maintain a full rogramme of  walks, something other rambling clubs did not do. To all involved in keeping things going, whether leading or 'behind the scenes', well done.

Please note fares in January will be going up. At the time of preparing this programme the new fares were not available, so please be understanding if asked to pay a little more than
what is shown.

And finally.... as it's winter, don't forget your torches just in case a walk cannot be finished in daylight.
