News, Views and items of interest
Many thanks to all who completed the mini survey on ideas to save money for the club. Views expressed were as follows:
Limit programme to walks only: Yes 3; No 20; Neutral 6
Limit programme to three per year: Yes 15; No 10; Neutral 2
Increase membership to £7 per year: Yes 24; No 2; Neutral 2
Give option to receive programme by E mail: Yes 12; No 5; Neutral 10
Your committee will now consider what action to take on the views expressed.
Welcome to New members: A hearty welcome to the following who have become fully paid up members since the last programme: Pat Downs, Christine Butt, Maureen Demetz, Anne Griffiths, Mary Cannon. We wish them many years of happy rambling with the club.
Publicising the Club: If your parish does not have our poster on its notice board please get a copy of the new one from the secretary or one of the membership secretaries and ask your parish priest for permission to put it up, or if there is one there already just replace it with the new one showing the names and details of the membership secretaries for the current year.
Obituaries: We were sorry to hear of the death of the following:
Mary O’Connell who first joined the club in 1946 and became a life member when we were preparing the club history in 1997. Sadly the only way we heard she had died was her programme being returned marked “addressee deceased”.
Eileen Short (nee Brick). Both Eileen and her husband were members in the early 1950s and Eileen was a cousin of Angela Shardlow to whom we offer our sympathy.
Carol Anley’s mother who died in March and Penny Rivett’s mother who died in April. We extend our sincere sympathy to Carol and Penny and other members of their families.
Sick members: Please remember in your prayers members who are prevented from walking due to illness. At the time of writing Denis Spiller, a long standing life member, is ill in Stoke Mandeville hospital and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
The Pilgrims of St Francis: 2009 walking pilgrimage: This is an international pilgrimage group with aims highly compatible with ours. They organise an annual walking pilgrimage in a different country each year on lines similar to the Arundel and Brighton Ecumenical Walking Pilgrimage which several of our members have joined over the years. In 2009 the annual international pilgrimage will be in the United Kingdom. We will keep in touch with the organisers and give full details of how to join in the pilgrimage as time goes on. Visit their website at www.cdsf.org for further details. Sorry the website address was incorrect in the last programme. The following events in England in 2008 may provide an opportunity to make the acquaintance of the pilgrims of St Francis.
The National Pilgrimage 16- 23 Aug. starting at Hassocks (a small village north of Brighton and close to Ditchling) and finishing at Chichester. ‘Route in Car’ will be available if you are unable to walk very much.
The costs will be:- £95 full rate; £80 for young/unemployed,£50 for children over 4.
Future Dates for Your Diary
Compostella Pilgrimage: A few members did the first leg of the Compostella from Le Puys to Decazeville in April. Maurice Hickman was the route finder and all returned safely. Maurice intends to continue the trek in September. If interested in joining him ring him.
Saturday 4th October - Annual General Meeting: This year the feast of St Francis falls on a Saturday so we will be able to have the annual Mass for members intentions and AGM on the feast day itself. Please put it in your diary now so that we can ensure a good turnout for this important event in the club’s calendar.
Saturday 8th November - Mass for deceased members: This is another important annual event so please make a note of the date now.
Sunday 14 December: Christmas Ramble and Social.
Saturday 20 December: Christmas Dinner. Details in next programme.
God bless and happy rambling.
