RECENT CLUB EVENTS
Maureen Furlong writes :
*Easter Weekend, Totland Bay, Isle of Wight: 24th to 27th March 1989 Fourteen members took part. Some stayed in the Youth Hostel and a few made other arrangements but we all met for the Easter services and the walks.
This was a very happy weekend with the added bonus of being able to visit John and Sheila White and everyone was delighted to see Meg and Mary Walsh so comfortably settled in their new homes in Freshwater.
A big 'Thank you' to Maurice for organising the weekend and for leading the very pleasant rambles.
Special thanks also to Sheila and John; Meg and Mary for their warm welcome and hospitality - as someone remarked : "Isn't it good to have friends on the Islandl" "And so say all of us ••••••••••
*Y.H.A. WEEKEND - Arundel 28th April - 1st May 1989
The Spring Bank Holiday spent in West Sussex was another very enjoyable weekend. We walked part of the South Downs Way, and during the Sunday ramble, made a worthwile visit to the Roman Villa at Bignor.
Thanks again, Maurice
*PILGRIMAGE to the HOLY LAND April 1989
Having seen Mary Sheahan's notice of a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land to take place in April, five club members took part in what proved to be a delightful and memorable week visiting Tiberius and Jerusalem. It was a wonderful experience.
Diocese of Arundel and Brighton 1989 Ecumenical Walking Pilgrimage
Saturday 12th August to Saturday 26th August 1989.
St Richard was born in Droitwitch in 1197. He studied in Oxford, Paris and Bologna. He bacame Chancellor of Oxford University, was ordained in France and elected Bishop Of Chichester in 1244. He had to live as a wandering bishop fof 2 years before the King allowed him to take possession of his episcopal properties. He worked hard for reform and stamped out abuses. He was strict with the clergy and generous to the poor. He loved a simple life and the company of humble people. He was taken ill on a preaching journey and died in Dover in 1253. Pope Urban VI declared him a saint in 12 62. Our pilgrimage will follow footpaths and tracks from Droitwich through the Vale of Evesham and Cotswold Hills to Oxford, and then on via the Thames Valley andand /hampshire downs to Chichester
