EASTER YOUTH HOSTEL WEEKEND Bridges Hostel is situated in a
AT BRIDGES Y.H. SHROPSHIRE valley between two ranges of hills
known as the Long Hynd and the Stiperstones in the part of Shropshire close to the Welsh border and once known as the Welsh Marshes. The Long Hynd, as its name suggests has length rather than height and affords some fine ridge walking with beautiful views, and along its course are many delightful valleys to be explored. Contrasting sharply with the Hynd is the Stiperstone ridge, which is a smaller range and is strewn with quartzite which on its summit forms strangely shaped tors, the largest and highest being the Devil's Chair. Over the years the sinister appearance of these formations has been the source of many delightful legends that enrich Shropshire folklore. During the weekend we hope to visit surrounding places and also Ludlow, one of the best medieval towns in England.
Travel will be by coach on Friday April 12th leaving Charing Cross Underground Station (Embankment entrance) at 9.15 a.m., and picking up also at Uxbridge Sta. at 10.0 a.m. The coach will stop en route at Ross on Wye for lunch and to enable members to attend the Good Friday Service at St Francis of Rome Catholic Church. The coach will be available for our use over the week-end and will return on Monday at about 2 p.m. A more detailed itinerary will be issued later to those who are coming. Accommodation at the Hostel is strictly limited to 30 and you are advised to book with Christine Van Duivanbode (enclosing £2 deposit) as soon as ppossible. Members wanting more comfortable accommodation may get suitable addressed from her either in Bridges or a few miles away in Church Stratton, where the coach will enable them to join the daily excursions and rambles. Total fares about £4.
To this must be added the cost of accommodation at youth hostel or boarding houses, etc. Please remember to renew your Y.H.A membership soon as enrolment may take longer due to power cuts and postal delays. Some idea of the pleasures awaiting those who are coming may be obtained by attending the programme of colour transparencies of the area which Christine Van Duivenbode is presenting at Bunhill Row on March 12th at 7.30 p.m.
CHILDRENS' PARTY This popular annual eventwill again be in the capable hands of KATH HOLLAND and will be held at Bunhill Row on Saturday April 27th 1974. Invitations will be sent out by Kath to those whose addresses she has, but all children of present and past members (with their parents) are welcome to come. The price of tickets this year is £2.65 for singles and £5.00 for married couples. This is very little more than last year and we can only hope to break even if the event is well supported. Tickets may be obtained from any member of the Committee or by post from John Lawrence. There is a tear off slip for· your convenience below. Provisional dates are from March 22nd or 23rd coming back between March 31st and April 5th, dependent on cost. Send John an S,A.E. telling him what dates suit you best and he will send you details as soon as they are available.
SOCIALS At BUNHILL ROW : Attendancies at Bunhill Row continue to csuse
great concern to your Committee and it has been decided that there is no alternative to drastically cutting down the number of events held there. In this we have been helped by the generosity of members who have made their homes available. The £1 Incentive-to-come draw has been discontinued as the improveme in attendance noticed when the scheme started has not. been rnaintained. There are only four events at Bunhill on this list and, in fairness to Father Higgs, we cannot really make them less frequent . It is hoped, therefore, that members will come in good numb ers to these four rneetings; if they do not we may be forced to sever our conne ction with St. Joseph 's Church ,and school . Every one would surely agree this would be a pity.
COMMlTTEE MEETINGS The Committee meets next on Frdiday Mayy 3rd and the next list is being run-off on May 15th and 17th. Please let John have any iterns forinclu ion in good time to get them typed.
RAMBLES BY RAIL As this is being typed we hear that A.S.L.E.F. have have acceded to Harold Wilson's request to suspend their industrial action during the General Election campaign. It is of course on the cards that the wrong result at the polls will take the trains off again and just in case this happens details of emergency travel arrangements are given on are given below. Keep your finegers crossed .
YOUR PRAYERS ARE ASKED for Mary Kyte, who has recently unrdergone an operation and whose recovery has been impeded by cornplications. Also for Michael Easton whose mother died recently after a very long illness . HOLY MASS for the repose of her soul is to be offered at St. Joseph 's Church, Bunhill Row on Tuesday April 2nd at 7/30 p.m. Please try to attent if you possibly can.
