NEW MEMBERS

We extend a welcome to the following new members to our Club and hope they will be very happy with us:

Patricia Hobbs; . Stan Lowe and Joan Anciaume

Tuesday evenings · Time to spare after work:? Why not join us for a meal at the Copper Kitchen restaurant, almost opposite St. Mary Moorfields Church, in Eldon Street. It is open until 7 p. m.

Rambles . . . If you would like to lead a ramble for the club, please contact Dermot. Would leaders hand in their proposed ramble details in good time for the next quarter, and please may we have ALL the items requested on the cards. On the last quarter's list, details such as times of trains, station of departure, mileage, name of lunch place, at least one of these, were missing on at least half the rambles handed' in by leaders, with the result that with only 5 days to go before printing and despatch, I had to write frantically round three of these leaders, one of whom never even bothered to reply.

If these lists are to go out in good time, please be detailed about your information, Thank you.

Mr Shannon, R.I.P.

Many of-the club members will have already heard of Mr. Shannon's sudden death after a brief illness in hospital, just before Christmas. Fr. Higgs said that Mr. Shannon was a true Christian, always kind, always helpful, never stinting in his generosity. Our club goes along with that description. A Mass was offered for his recovery just two days before he died, but it appears that the Almightly had other ideas. Please say a prayer for him, and for Mrs. Shannon.

A collection has been started for Mrs. Shannon and is still open if anyone else would li'lte to contribute.

Rev. Mother Elizabeth

Another good friend of the club also died before Christmas. She was the superior of the Convent of Mercy in the Borough where we have our Christmas parties.

Her community said she had been a marvellous nun and a. wonderful superior. R. I. P.

He has· just had his first book published which received a wonderful review in the Catholic Herald a few weeks ago. "Father John Baptist's book is a most" -admirable achievement. He starts from where people are and gives them a deep and inspiring insight into Catholic belief today .as the best theologians are expounding it, and as the Council has outlined it for our time ... Father John B. has avoided- the dried-up approach and provided instead a aplendid portrait of Catholic faith and 1ife ...." 'The review was headed: "Religion without Tears for the Switched-on Adult" .

Nasty.Notice, No.2

Firstly: Criticism is often levelled at ramble leaders, so now I propose to do some mud-slinging at the 'followers'. There are a small number of people, who, for reasons best known to themselves, persist in going ahead of the leader. They usually set up a cracking pace and the rest, generally deep in conversation, tend to follow because they haven't noticed the "change" in leadership.

May I ask these men to desist from such tactics? It not only spoils the ramble for the others but it certainly shows a lack of good manners towards the leader. If such men don't like the pace set by the leaders, perhaps in going ahead of them they could go and get lost.

Secondly: Could all followers keep an eye on those coming up behind them. Occasionally it happens we go round a blind corner, there is a big gap between the front and the back halves and it is not until the latter have to resort to halloo-ing and shouting, that the front half realise what has happened. The leader can't have his eyes at the back of his head

if he is to, keep to the right path, so it's up to us to help him in this way..

Thank you.

Christmas Party

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped prepare the party. They will be gratified to hear that the decks were almost cleared, only a few pints of milk and some biscuits were left. Also a very big tribute and thank you to Tony Chainey, whose tirelessness and good humour made this party the great success it was.

And thank you also to Barbara Lawless who typed the :Magazine for us.
