September - November 1998

Greetings Ramblers,

Where has our summer weather gone! I did not get out as much as I would have liked this year owing to a busy schedule, but I am beavering away getting the programme together, also getting ready for the A G. M. I hope all members are enjoying the rambles so far this year. Paul is still keen to hear from anyone wishing to lead a ramble. There are volunteers to help with walk outs if required, and if you would like to be one of the volunteers
please us know. We are also anxious to hear from anyone who would be prepared to serve a term on the committee. It requires a little of your time every three months and is very rewarding seeing the club grow and thrive.

Welcome to new members: Tony Brockman, Epsom, Surrey. Maria Darroch,
London, N19 4PJ. John & Marta Haworth, Sidcup, Kent, DAI5 3WA
Anastasia Polito, Worcester Park, Surrey, KT4 8DA, Antoinette Ratnam, Wimbledon, London, SW196AQ.

Can I take this opportunity to remind all new members to wear suitable footwear with ankle support for their own safety. It can be muddy and rough under foot. Please read your introductory leaflet
carefully as it gives good advice.

A.G.M

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday October l0th. at 3pm. sharp. Once again we are holding it in the Holy Apostles Hall as the small hall in St Saviours is not available. We are looking for committee members to continue the running of the club. If any member is prepared to give a little of their time once every three months to serve n the committee please let
us know. I have served on the committee now for four years and found it very rewarding and good fun. I now feel it is time to hand over to someone else.

Paul Brunning will be standing down as Vice President this year due to
other commitments. We thank him for his loyal service and advice over the
years. Nominations for Vice President and committee members should be sent to me 14 days before the AG.M (nomination forms are enclosed with this programme). Motions other than nominations for the committee must reach me 5 weeks before the AGM ie by Saturday 12 September.

MEMBERSHIP SUBS: Please remember to pay your membership subscription. Subs are due in October and it is a great help to the committee if members pay up on time and do not have to be reminded. It is still only £4 and cheques payable to "St Francis of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club" should be sent to our Treasurer: Gillian McLauchlan.

SUMMER PARTY; This was not so well attended this time perhaps due o the exceptionally hot day on Saturday 25th July. We had a change of D.J. as Paul let us down at the last minute, leaving me to search frantically for an alternative. I managed to get Gary who provided a great selection of music for all to enjoy. The
raffle was well supported. Thanks to all who provided prizes for same. Time now to prepare for our Christmas events. We would welcome suggestions for a venu for our Christmas meal.

ANNUAL MASS FOR MEMBERS: This time of year we have a Mass for the
members and deceased members of the club. I have arranged for both Masses to be celebrated at St Mary Moorfields Church, Eldon Street. Nearest station Liverpool Street and there is now an exit by Platform 1
directly onto Eldon Street, just a few yards from St Mary's. The celebrant is our President Fr David Barnes. Dates are as follows, October 3rd. Mass at 5.30 This Mass is celebrated for the Members of the St. Francis Ramblers. November 7th. Mass at 5.30 This Mass is celebrated for the Deceased
members of The St Francis Ramblers. Members can socialise after both Masses over a meal.

THANKS: Patrick Crehan would like to thank all members who sponsored
him on his walk to raise funds for St Joseph's Hospice in Hackney. Patrick
raised £250. Over £100 came from the St Francis Ramblers.

The Hickmans would like to thank all members who walked on Rena Borg's ramble and supported RedhilI parish fete. Overall figure was £3158 for the DE Paul trust. Plant and produce, £103, Beer tent £90 (I wonder how much of that came from St Francis Ramblers!'), Refreshments £148, Bar-B-Q and Filipino food £365.

Day of Recollection 1999: We are still open to suggestions for a new  venue for next year. The Catechetical Centre in Tooting Bec and the Marie
Reparatrice Centre in Wimbledon have been suggested as possibilities but
we would welcome any others. Ideally we would like a place near London and if there is a bit of countryside close by to have a short ramble afterwards so much the better.

MONTHLY DINNERSClub members meet on the first Saturday of each month for a meal at a Central London Restaurant (not too ex
pensive). Meeting place is outside Westminster Cathedral after 6 pm Mass. The September Mass will be in the cathedral as usual and members meet outside the Cathedral after 6pm Mass for a meal at a local restaurant Contact any committee member for details.

Y.H.A Group Membership Card: The club is in possession of a group
membership YHA card. Contact me (Helen) if you would like to borrow it for
hostel weekends.

Obituary: We received the sad news of the death of Bernadette O'Brien at the young age of 39. Bernadette bore her illness bravely with the support of her family and friends from both the St. Francis ramblers and the L.C.C. We offer our sympathy to her Parents and family. Anne Alcock has organised a Mass to be celebrated on Saturday 5th September at 3pm at Our Lady of
the Visitation Parish Church, Greenford Road, Greenford, Middlesex. The Parish Club will be open for an hour after the Mass for people to meet Bemadette's family.

Items for next programme should reach the secretary or ramble list compiler by the end of October.

SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC RAMBLERS CLUB

SECRETARY'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 1998

The club has remained very active with 176 membership subscriptions including 50 life members. Married couples have joint membership. The actual number of people in the club is about 220.

The committee elected for this year were: Vice President Paul Brunning, Secretary Helen Hunt, Treasurer Gillian McLauchlan, Ramble List Compiler Paul Connolly , Membership Secretaries Bridie Barry, Francis O'Sullivan, Social Secretary Lyn Woolham, Committee Members, Maurice Hickman, Stephen Graham.
The committee met five times during the year to discuss social events, membership, rambles, advertising and any other topics that came up.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Two parties were organised. A Christmas Party was held in January in St Saviours Church Hall in Pimlico. This was a great success. A surplas of £100 from the January party was put into the Assisi Fund,. See below. A Summer Party on July 25th at St Saviours Church Hall. The Summer Party
was poorly attended and we made a loss of £77. Music was provided in January by Colour Splash with Paul as D.J He let us down for the summer party and I had to get a replacement at short notice. I found Gary provided a great selection of music for the same price we normally pay.

A Christmas dinner was also organised for the club. This year Lynn booked "The St. Martins Beefeater Restaurant" in John Adams Street. This was attended by Thirty members. The Monthly dinners are still going but could do with some new ideas. Members who attended the dinners on a regular basis decided to return to Westminster Cathedral for 6pm Mass, meeting outside the Cathedral. It was suggested that a few members put their names forward as contacts for the dinners.

A day of Recollection was organised on March 29th at the "Benediction Centre for Spirituality" Cockfosters. The day was well attended. Some members booked at the last minute or turned up on the day inspite of the advice to book early. It was held during lent at the request of some of our members. Dom Anthony OSB conducted the morning session and our President Fr David followed with a lenten theme in the afternoon concluding with Holy Mass.

Two Masses were also arranged. One on the 3rd of October for St Francis Members and the second on the 7th of November for the Deceased Members of the club. Both Masses are in St Mary Moorfields Church, Eldon Street and will be celebrated by Fr David Barnes . In addition {7} Masses were arranged for club members and relatives who passed away. Many club members attended these masses.

Assisi Disaster Fund: Prior to the last A.G.M Mary Hickman proposed that the club contribute £100 towards this fund. Members sent in further donations amounting to £85. A further £100 was donated from the January Party bringing the total to £285. This was sent to Mr John Beary, President of the Secular Franciscan Order otherwise known as the Third Order at the Franciscan Friary in Wexford Ireland. Mr Beary assured me the money went straight to Assissi. The club has a reciept for same and a letter of thanks.

CLUB PUBLICITY
Each member was sent a club publicity poster to put on their church notice board at the beginning of the year. An advert was also placed in the Westminster Record which brought in some enquiries. Adverts are also placed in the Westminster Year Book and the Southwark Catholic Directory and the Brentford Diocesan Directory and The Arundel and Brighton Directory. Contacts, Helen Hunt, and Peter Lobo. and Ron Scott and Maurice Hickman.

The sad loss of Bemadette 0' Brien, a member of the club who died this year after an illness bravely boume. Anne Allcock club member and member of the London Catholic Club arranged a Mass in Greenford on the 5th September. This was attended by Bemadette's Family, members and friends.

As secretary I enjoyed another busy year and thank all members for their support. I will ensure a smooth handover to the next secretary and will be available to offer any advice.
