On 29 April 2021 we got the very welcome news that after nearly 5 months of enforced absence of organised rambles the club is going to spring into action on the May Day Bank Holiday. A very welcome e mail from our ramble list compiler revealed the following start up plans for the next few weeks.
Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2021 Leader: Ant Connolly (Explorer map 162)
Meet: Outside Woolwich Arsenal station 1045 for 1100 start. Toilets on
platform 1 in station. No toilets en route for 5 mile
Train options - 1) Cannon Street 1005 arriving 1030 – train
also calls London Bridge 1009.
2) Charing Cross 1012 arriving 1044 - train also calls Waterloo East 1015 and London Bridge 1021.
3) DLR services from Stratford (low level) via
West Ham and Canning Town.
Lunch: Abbey Arms, Abbey Wood (pizzas and pasta menu).
Lunch at end of the walk but a half hour rest at Lesnes
Abbey so bring a snack.
There is a kiosk (Chestnuts) for hot drinks and snacks, and toilet
Facilities
Tea: N/A
Distance: 7.5 miles returning from Abbey Wood. Visiting the
ruins and looking at the wood carvings by Tom Harvey
in Abbey Woods.
Fare: Oyster/Freedom passes
Ant will meet the ramblers at Woolwich Arsenal.

Sunday 9th May. Leader: John Burbage (Explorer map 146)
Meet: London Waterloo 0915 for the 0932 train to Epsom (arr. 1007) to meet the 1015 service to Box Hill and Westhumble (arr. 1046).
Train also calls Vauxhall 0936, Clapham Junction 0941 and Wimbledon 0948.
Semi-fast service available from London Bridge 0916 to Epsom (arr. 0955). First stop Mitcham Eastfields.
Lunch: Bring snacks/sandwiches for an ‘al fresco’ lunch at the NT centre on Box Hill. Hot drinks and facilities available.
Tea: Bikers Cafe, Burford Bridge.
Distance: 8 miles returning from Boxhill and Westhumble. A walk around the River Mole and Country Park with two hills taking the less steep routes. Great views!
Fare: £8.40 CDR Box Hill and Westhumble with railcards. Freedom Pass holders must purchase an extension from Epsom £3.30 return.
Note: There are no services out of Victoria due to engineering work

Saturday 15th May. Leader: Maurice Hickman (Explorer map 146)
Meet: Blackfriars at 0830 for 0854 train to Redhill (arr. 0932).
Ramblers can pick up this train at Finsbury Park 0838, St Pancras International - platform A 0845, London Bridge 0900 and East Croydon 0916.
Lunch: The Sportsman, Mogador (early lunch)
Tea: The kiosk, Reigate Hill. Seating at a premium so please bring a
mat to sit on.
Distance: 10 miles plus optional extra 1 to 1.5 miles for outdoor social drink. Returning from Redhill (2 trains an hour).
Fare: £8.40 CDR Redhill (£3.35 from boundary Zone 6) with
Railcards. PAYG Oyster/Contactless also valid, but not
Freedom or 60+ Oyster passes.
Some hilly stretches but these are not too demanding. Hopefully there will still be bluebells to enjoy in Gatton Park (National Trust).
Maurice will meet the ramblers at Redhill.
Saturday 22nd May Leader: Maria Vaz (OS Explorer 173)
Meet: Outside East Finchley (Northern line – High Barnet branch) 0945 f for 10 00 prompt start (follow the exit sign for the High Road)
Lunch: The Village Green pub, Muswell Hill; or there are lots of eating options on the high street including a Wetherspoon pub
Tea: No T today
Distance: 8½ mile ramble through parks and ancient woodlands in this urban area of North London. Includes some hills and great views of the capital’s skyline.
The walk finishes at Alexandra Palace station (or short walk away is Wood Green (Piccadilly line)
Fare: Oyster/Freedom pass/Travelcard options
Maria will meet the ramblers at East Finchley station.
Sunday 30th May. Leader: Brian Falls (OS Landranger map 153)
Meet: Kings Cross 0850 for 0913 train to Arlesey (arr 0949). Also calls Finsbury Park 0919.
Lunch: Green Man, Stanford
Tea: Maybe
Distance: 13 mostly level miles via rivers/streams, lakes, open fields and a pine woods, returning from Arlesey.
Fare: £9.50 CDR Arlesey with railcard discounts.
Brian will meet the ramblers at Arlesey.
