Hello Ramblers


I would like to wish all members happy rambling in 1997, 1996 was a very successful year for the club. The rambles were varied and interesting and
well supported.


I am please to announce that we begin 1997 with the vacant place on the Committee filled by Lyn Woolham. We welcome Lyn onto the committee and are happy that we now have our full committee 

 

The club still needs new ramble leaders and Maurice will be pleased to hear from any members who are prepared to lead a ramble.


I would to take this opportunity to thank Helen and Diana Fox for their hospitality after Diana's ramble in December.

Most members have now paid their subscriptions. Those who have not are
deemed to be lapsed 

 

Christmas dinner:
Thirty four members got together at 11Porticos Restaurant and enjoyed a Christmas meal This is an opportunity for members to socialise.

 

Monthly dinners: Club members meet on the first Saturday of each month for a meal at a Central London Restaurant (not too expensive). The next three will be I March, 5 April and 3 May. Please note that in future the meeting place will be outside Westminster Cathedral after the 6 pm Mass. CONTACT

CHRISTMAS PARTY:
This was held on January 18th in St Saviours Church Hall in Pimlico and was a great success. Thanks to all who contributed to the raffle, this was
well supported. Also to members who helped in the clearing of the hall at the end of the evening. Over 90 members and friends attended. We actually
made a profit this year. We are now busy organising the summer party. Incidentally someone left a bag and scarf in the hall. If it was you please contact me to arrange collection.


WALKING HOLIDAY IN BAVARIA: Paul Connolly has contacted us to say that he is organising a walking! sight seeing holiday in Bavaria in June. See Ramble list for full details.


Advance Notice: Club Holiday, Bourton on Water. 23rd May to 30th May 1998. Ester Harris has booked 44 places at the Holiday Fellowship house and if all are filled there will be no supplements to pay. The price of the holiday will be known by May 1997. Deposit for holiday is £25 payable by Sept 13th to Ester Harris. 

 

DAY OF RECOLLECTION SUNDAY 9 MARCH: This year we have been asked by members to organise the day of recollection in Lent. This will be held at the Benedictine Centre For Spirituality, 29 Bramley Road, London,
N14 4HE. The Day will be conducted by Dom Anthony. Nearest Tube stations Cockfosters and Oakwood on the Piccadilly line.


The Monastery is on the All 0 halfway between the intersection with the AlII and Oakwood Underground station. By Motorway, leave the M25 at Junction 24 and head south on the A III for approximately three miles. By Bus, the 307 bus stops outside the Church on Bramley Road. There is also a car park at the Church. The cost for the day is £10 . This includes a light lunch. Names and payment can be sent to Tom Heron or myself (Helen) as soon as possible as time is short. Please make cheques payable to "St Francis of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club". The day starts at 10 am sharp and ends with Mass at 4 pm. 

 

OBITUARY
We are sad to announce the death of Steve WaIter in September 1996. We would also like to extend our sincere sympathy to Torn Heron (committee member) on the death of his Mother in January. Also to John and Medeleine
Lawrence on the death of John's Mother. Masses will be offered for Mrs Lawrence on Monday 10th March at 8pm. and for Mrs Heron on March 11th at 8 pm. Both Masses will be at S1. Boniface Church, Mitcham Road.

Meet: Victoria* at 9 30 for 9 47 train to Lewes (arr. 1051 ). Fare: £8.45 with Network Card.
Morning walk to visit the Priory ruins, castle (Barbican ) and Anne of Cleves House.
Late lunch ( 1.30 - 2.30 ) The Sun, Sun St (good food and "Shep" beers)
After lunch we will follow Maurice's intended route for the start of Day 10 of the "A & B Pilgrimage" (i.e. Lewes to Eastbourne) and then proceed up Mt Caburn (good views of Ouse Estuary) before returning to Lewes by different paths. A hilly walk of 4 1/2 miles. For those who wish it there is a 6 pm mass at Lewes. For those who wish to meet us at the pub, catch the] 11 47 train (arr. 12 49) turn right out of station and go uphill past the lights. Shortly after
road bends left, turn right down side street (Sun St). Sun Inn is at bottom on left. For those going on afternoon walk, catch 13 47 train (arr. 14 49) and we shall meet you at the station.

Early lunch ( ]230 - 1.30) : The Trevor Arms, Glynde (near station)
Tea: No tea but you may be in time at Lewes to grab a cuppa at Lewes station.
Distance: 10 1/2 miles returning from Berwick. Hilly in morning but gentle in afternoon.
Fare: £13.70 CDR BERWICK. This is the A & B Pilgrimage Walkout continued. Maurice is intending to spend Saturday night at Alfriston Youth Hostel. See page 6.

Meet Victoria * at 1025 for 1043 train to Redhill (arr. 1115 ), then 411 bus at 1130 from Redhill Bus Station (opposite rail station) to Bletchingley (arr. 1140). Look around Bletchingley, have lunch there and go on walk of up to 6 miles. Return by bus to Redhill.

Meet: Waterloo at 1100 for 1120 train to Guildford (arr. 1153 ).
Look around museum etc. Hopefully, guided tour in afternoon. Lunch/tea in Guildford.

This weekend is in conjunction with the walkouts for the A & B Pilgrimage in August. Travel light as all your belongings will have to be carried. We will be staying Sat. night at Alfriston Youth Hostel (Frog Firle ). It is essential to be a member of the Youth Hostels Association (cost £9.50) You can become a member at the Youth Hostel, or by writing to YHA Trevelyan House, St Albans, Herts, ALl 2DY. If you wish to come on this weekend and wish
Maurice to book up at the Hostel for you, please send Maurice a deposit of £8.50 together with a SAE by 3rd March. After this date you will have to book up at the hostel yourself - name, address and te!. no. supplied.

This is a weekend staying at Crowden-in-Longdendale Youth Hostel. Travel will be by the 1400 hour coach from Victoria Coach Station (Service 540R) to Manchester Coach Station, Chorlton St (arr. 1835 ), then by the 1930 coach (Service 351 ) direct to Crowden Youth Hostel (arr. 2030 hours ). Return by 1355 coach from Hostel the following Monday. Cost of
return fare on coach to Manchester is £20.50. Return fare Manchester to Crowden is £5. Thus total is £25.50. You can book up at any National Express agent. Cost of 3 nights at  hostel (breakfast extra and can be ordered at the hostel) is £20.85. Ifyou wish Maurice to book up for you please send him a deposit of £21 by 3rd March with SAE for further details.

Walking/sightseeing holiday in Eastern Bavaria in June Organiser: Paul
