May 1993

Hi Ramblers,

Please read the events on the last two pages and where booking is necessary, make yours without delay. Highlights are the Day of Recollection on Sunday 20 June and the Summer Party on Saturday 24 July. Both of these involve a bit of expense up front and we have to make a forecast of how many will attend well in advance. If numbers are less than forecast then club funds have to make up the balance but if we get more than expected then :there can be a small surplus for the club. The Christmas Party had to be subsidised and "the Day of Recollection usually has to be subsidised too. We can afford this luxury just now but it would be nice if there was sufficient support to ensure that each event paid for itself.

Peace Prayer of St Francis

Lord make me an instrument of thy peace

Where there is hatred .. .let me sow love

Where there is injury ... pardon;

Where there is doubt...faith;

Where there is despair ... hope;

Where there is darkness .. .light;

Where there is sadness .. joy       .

O Divine Master, grant that  I may not so I much seek

To be consoled  ... as to console

To be understood .. as to understand

To be loved ... as to love

For It is in giving ... that we receive.

It is in pardoning .. that we are pardoned

It is in dying ... that we are born to eternal life.

ENCOURAGING NEW RAMBLE LEADERS

The committee was charged at the AGM in 1992 with reporting to the 1993 AGM on ways of ensuring that the Ramble List compiler would have a sufficient supply of rambles to draw on. This is a mid-year update on our deliberations and an invitation to all members to express views on this recurring subject.

The topic has featured in the last 2 AGMs in the form of a proposal, twice put and twice defeated, that leaders be reimbursed for the cost of walking out rambles. This is seen by those who favour the idea as a way of making a gesture of appreciation from the club to the leaders. Arguments against are that it would be .contrary to the spirit of giving voluntary service, it would require a large increase in subscriptions and could lead to pressure for other payments such as cost of footwear. A more modest suggestion was to
allow free membership for ramble leaders.

Another idea is the provision of training of a relatively formal nature for prospective new leaders. One training session has already been held and attracted a very good turnout of 18 members, with 8 attending the practical part of the course on Saturday 15 May.

 Another proposal was to have a whip round on rambles for the leader. This was not popular as it would threaten the record of the St Francis Ramblers as probably the only Catholic activity where we are not bombarded for money! More seriously, most of the leaders present at the AGM felt that they would be embarrassed by such a move. A variation of buying the leader drinks was unpopular for similar reasons and also for the threat it carried to the process of finding our way in the afternoon!

A proposal made since the AGM is that established leaders invite new members of the club to accompany them on walkouts and/or share the leadership of new leaders' first rambles. How would we ensure that contact was made between established leaders and new members? Would it be acceptable to include leaders' telephone numbers on the programme?

Please give your serious consideration to this important topic and be ready to contribute to the discussion at the AGM. Even better, help to get the whole topic off the agenda by offering to lead rambles. The present committee is generally opposed to direct payment in cash or kind but any future committee will obviously be guided by the wishes of the members as expressed at the AGM.

Welcome to new members: Joe Coyle, Patrick Crehan, Lorna Gallagher,Philip Groves and Anne Kennedy. Congratulations to Janet Somerville on becoming a life member.

Short walks: On this programme are a few shorter walks arranged at times to avoid a clash with the weekly ramble, which the committee feels should take precedence. The idea of walks on Saturday or midweek in summer time comes up from time to time. I am told they have not enjoyed great support when tried in the past. That is no
reason for not trying them again so this an opportunity for those who want them to support them. And don't be afraid to volunteer to lead one yourself. There are unlimited possibilities along the various water courses and public parks in London and the suburbs, so it's our own fault if we don't use them.

Monthly dinner: Saturday 5 June, Saturday 4 July and Saturday 7 August. Meet outside Westminster Cathedral after 6 PM Mass.
