NEW MEMBERS
We are pleased to extend a warm welcome to the following new members and hope we may have the pleasure of their compsny at all our activities:
Brigid Lowe (Imelda), Miss M. Sbannon, Mrs. Jo Taylor, Peter Taylor. and Cecilia Furtado.
Tuesday evenings · Time to spare after work:? Why not join us for a meal at the Copper Kitchen restaurant, almost opposite St. Mary Moorfields Church, in Eldon Street. It is open until 7 p. m.
Rambles If you would like to lead a ramble, please contact Mary Hickman either at her home address orbat a Tuesday evening social.
Would leaders hand in their proposed ramble details to Mary in good time for the next quarter. If they would like someone to help them 'walk out' a ramble beforehand, Mary will find a person willing to do so. Complaints have been made that the same rambles appear in the lists time after time. This is NOT the fault of the coommpiler. If people are unable to lead rambles the compiler is forced to fall back n 'reliables' who are always willing to fill in a gap but obviously have no tme at the usually short notice they are given, to walk a new ramble out beforehand so they have to use one they have done before. So it's up to you!
During the winter months it would be wise to bring torches along as it gets dark before the end of the ramble.
Attention please!
Fr Higgs recently lost his mother, a splendid old lady of over 90 years. Father will be offering Mass for the repose of her soul, on the Club's behalf, on 20th December, at 7 p.m. Please note the time It will give you time to have a nosh up beforehand and for a drink afterwwards. As Father Higgs has been unstintingly generous to our club, we would aslk members to try and make a special effort to come along for this Mass.
1.Autumn Bazaar
Nora Smeator,Jean Horan and a whole squad of helpers, raised £40 for the parish at Bunhill Row. Maureen Furlong won the bottle of gin (heaven help her!) would she like to collect it some time? Norah and Jean &: Co. would like to thank everybody who contributed to the stall,:and the club would like to thank them for their generosity in waving the club flag yet once again.

2.Christmas Ramble
. .., This.year it wi!l again be held in Otford, but for the last time. The proprietor has made some re-arrangements in the room where we made merry, so that it is rather difficult to carry on as of old there. The ramble will be on 15th December, and the cost will be ± 6/-. Maurice will lead the ramble and we hope he will change the route a little and make this ramble a bit shorter so that we won't get (a) so muddy, and (b) so exhausted! Energetic lot though we are, even the hardiest of us find ii; ·difficuit to cope with this formally gruelling ramble followed by an equally gruelling dance session. · If you don't want to join this ramble, we will be glad to see you for the dance. Remember to bring soft shoes.
3. Christmas Party ·
This'will be on January 4th at our usual rendezvous. (Please find directions at the end of this list). · ·The proceedings will start with buffet at 4. 30 p. m. and ·the fun and games at approx, 6.p. m. led by our inimitable Tony Chainey. This is usually an event when all the "oldies" turn up and have a grand get'together and gossip, we hope you will come again. Babies can be accomodated (I never have discovered where) and I daresay their youngsters will enjoy themselves hugely.
4. Holiday meeting
. The annual January meeting is on January 14th. Anybody with any bright ideas for a holiday can bring them along. Please have all, or most of the necessary details ready, such as (a) price, (b) date (no arguing about this afl;erwards), and (c) mode of' travel. . In the past a lot of time has been wasted when people have turned up with vague ideas and no definite dates for the holidays. It is impossible to. please everybody with rgeards to dates, you just have to pick your own fortnight and stick to it. As Germany and Austria have been rather well covered of recent years, may we suggest the club holiday be elsewhere next year?
5. Annual dinner and Dance (15th February)
As everyone seems to enjoy these at Schmidts, we shall be going there again. · Tickets will cost 26/ -. Please start saving up now for this occasion, if you miss it you will feel left out and wish you hadn't! If the club wants these dinner and dances to continue, we must ask you to support it with a more speedy enthusiasm than in the past. Every committee member will be issued with tickets as soon as they are printed, will people please go and ask for these, not wait to be asked. Trying to sell tickets for our annual events has become a major headaohe for the committee, and it isn't fair to expect them to come around practically on bended knees. If you want the annual dinner and dance, then please support it, or it will be dropped and you will have only yourselves, to blame.
6. Annual-Day of Recollectfon
Father John Baptist Waller, O. F. M., author of "For All Men" (and another book coming out) will be giving this on 9th March. The cost will be approx.12/. Again, will club members come forward with their nomination or be left out. Payments can be sent to the Secretary's addressfor those who don't come out on rambles or paid at the Tuesday evening. socials. . We are not going round begging and begging. Father can give his talks just as well to 40 people as to 90! The rendezvous will as usual at La Retraite.Convent, Atkins Road, London, S.W.4. Most of us are already familiar with this convent, and for those who have not been before, we . suggest you check an A-Z street map.
Father John Baptist is a very gifted preacher (and teacher) and· is: an excellent speaker, with a clear voice that can easily be heard at the back. I can guarantee that everyone will enjoy his talks immensely. He is so good at this sort of thing, that St. Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, invited him to take one of three lectureships at the coliege , where Father will be starting in January.
Don't miss this day, you will rue it if you do. Further details will appear in the next issue.
7. Will newly :marrieds and those who have changed their address, please notify the hon. sec. as soon as possible please.
8. Saturday rambling
John Lawrence: feels that there a number of people,. who because of Sunday commitments can't get out on Sunday rambles but would like Saturday rambles. He will lead two Saturday rambles this quarter as an experiment. John would like to point out that (a) there are more trains, (b) more tea places are open and last but not least (c) the pubs open at 6 p. m. (ooh!). The rambles will be found in the list.
9 Easter Weekend April 4-7th, 1969.
Richard, aided and abetted by John Lawrence, will be leading this again. The club will spend the holiday in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire We .shall travel by coach on Friday morning and will make Buxton in time for the afternoon service. We hope to stay at Buxton Youth Hostel and use the coach to have access to the surrounding countryside, The cost will be about £4.10. If you are interested please contact Richard Sumner with a deposit of £2 before the 15th. February 1969. Details of guest house accomodation will be available from the hon. sec. Before handing in their deposits members are advised to seek full details of the weekend from Richard as there will be one or two unusual features this time.
10. Subscriptions :Would members peaese give in their annual subscriptions as soon as possible, to Bill McCarthy. It is still 7/6d.10. Subscriptions :Would members·i:>ieaefe give in their-annual subscriptions as soon as possible, to Bill McCarthy. It is still 7/6d.
11. Nasty notice!
Every year at the A.G.M. the same complaints crop up; we are not pulling our weight: we don't help the .two committees: we lag behind on rambles, and so on ad infinitum, and, one.might almost add, ad nauseam! It would seem that members think the committees are the only people who should do ALL the work and ALL, the 'chatting up' of newcomers so they.(the members ordinary) can sit back, and on the other hand, the committees maintain that they only exist to do the executive work of the club and that it's up to EVEEYBODY to be generous.
And so it goes, .year after year, the one accusing the other, but neither willing to accept the ultimate reoponsibility for the well-being of the club.
The general feeling is that this situation has gone on for long enough and. that ALL members should be on the alert to welcome newcomers, to help with routine tasks and have a thought for others at all times!. The main committee have been asked to extra generous this year, will you do the same It is, after all, easier (and more satisfying} to give than to receive.
Directions to the Convent of Mercy, the Borough-, for the Christmas party
Leaving Liverpool Street station, Bishopsgate Exit, turn left up Bishopsgate towards Shoreditch. Take 4th turning 6n the right (Brushfield street), the 4th turning again on the right and this is Crispin Ctreet. The convent entrance is .
on the right. Go .the door furthest along, the first entrance is for the poor men and quite a nurber of members have mistakenly been accepted as such
( P.S. I wonder why?)
The present Committee would Iike to take this opportunity of extending their gratitude to the previous one for their generosity and bard work on behalf of our Club.
E. & O.
There are probably a lot of errors and omissions. These are due to the present hon. sec's inefficiency, incompetence and inexperience (and-probably a good many other in-'s too). For which I humbly beg everyone's pardon!
