from your summer holiday when vou receive this programme and I hope you had great time. It is good to see Club members teaming up tor weekend breaks, walking in the Pyrenees and other social activities. I
hope there will be many more
such acuvities in the future.

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS,
Subscripuons for the club year
1996 - 7 fall due in October. They can be paid to Kevin Doyle or any committee member or at lite A.G.M Cheques should be made payable to "St Francis of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club".
Any members who have not paid
by end of December are deemed by the constitution to have lapsed, We usually allow a little flexibility, but the amount of reminding that has been necessary in the past has been excessive. It is not fair to members who pay up their subs to have to subsidise those members who fall behind,

.ourv Church, Lupus Street, Pimlico where we had our Christmas and Summer parties. Please see separate flier for details and nomination forms for committee members. The AGM will be followed at 6 pm by Mass for members' intentions at the Holy

The Mass on each or these occasions will be in Holv apostles Church, Winchester Street, Pirnlico SW1 and the dinner venue will be close by. As

History of the Club -
Fund Raising: Work on this project is pressing on but if the book is to be published a good deal of money wll be required up front to meet publishing and printing costs. In the course of researches into the club's history we have discovered a very interesting series of articles in a
newsletter which the Club published
regularly in the 1950s. These articles have been brought together in a single booklet which is being sold to raise money for the wider book project. The price is a modest £1 and if you would like a copy or copies
please send me a SAE (big enough to take an A5 page) together with a cheque (payable to "St Francts of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club") for £1 per copy required.

Club publicity: Is there a copy of the small poster advertising the club on your parish notice board') If not please send me a SAE and I vvill send you one to give to your Parish Priest. If you are a member of a social club you may ask permission to place our poster on their notice board. New members arc always welcome

SUMMER PARTY:
The summer party was held in St
Saviours Church Hall in Pimlico.
It was attended by over 80 members
and friends and was a great
success. The raffle helped towards
the overall costs. Thanks to all
who contributed prizes. A special
thanks to members of the London

support our social events.

Basic elements of map reading.
Tasks
I) Plot grid references on map, These will be spaced at appropriate intervals     particularly where paths intersect with major features (churches etc) and       where the path changes direction,

2) Identify features at grid reference points,

3) Follow from one reference point to the next.

4) Once you have plotted the grid references on the map, work out the              distance of the morning and afternoon walks]

5) Identify natural features i.e. hills, woods, and streams.

6) Determine at which points the hills are ascending and descending, Also        how steep the hills are i.e. the closer the contour lines are on the map the      steeper the hill!

It will be useless undergoing these map reading exercises unless you familiarise yourselves with the symbols on the map, These are given at the edge of the map.

An easy mnemonic to remember how to use grid references is EASTINGS and NORTHINGS
E coming before N in the alphabet The EAST!NGS refer to the horizontal grid line forming the bottom part of the square and the NORTHINGS to the vertical line forming the LII part of the square. The first two digits in the grid reference are the EASTINGS. the fourth and fifth digits NORTH1NGS, the third and sixth digits refer to the position within the square. Experienced map readers, 'know-alls' are welcome to come along for the practice walk but
let the inexperienced try to work out the answers for themselves.
Maps
Maps to be used are: Landranger 199 or Pathfinder Sheets 'TQ 42/52 and TO 62/72,
Please bring either the appropriate Landranger or Pathfinder maps with you,
Bring also a matchstick or ruler for measuring distances with.
Study the map symbols given at the side of the map carefully before you come.
