MAGAZINE EDITOR
Adrian Kelly.
Will authors please submit their articles in good time for publication?! Material for the next quarter should be in by the 19th July. Thank you. How about a correspondence column?. Last year I sent in a highly provocative letter which aroused tremendous argument verbally, but nothing was actually written in reply. A few ,jokes would come in handy too. So come on, let's liven the mag. up a bit.
We would like to extend a welcome to the following new members and hope they have many pleasant hours with us:
Carla Giese, Ursula McBride, Christopher Jones, Paul Kennedy.
MAPS
Richard Sumner keeps the map library from which anybody may borrow if they wish.
MASS
We would 1ike to offer our sympathy to Tony Ryan, whose mother died recently. Mass will be offered for the repose of her soul on 2nd June, (Friday) at 7 p.m. at St, Joseph's. (Late news: Our sympathy also to Rose Talbot who has lost her father recently).
Evening at Father Clayton's, Croxley Green
This is on 8th June, with ramble led by Maddie Webster this year. Please
remember to bring knives, forks, spoons, soft shoes for square dancing and
girls bring skirts if they wish. There is Mass at Croxley Green at 6 p. m.
so you needn't get up early (isn't that nice!). High tea will cost 5/-.
Rambles.
More leaders please. If you have never led a ramble before, don't worry, somebody will always be glad to help you. It's advisable to walk it out beforehand, but remember it is quicker for two people to walk out a ramble than for 30.
Whilst we are on the subject of rambles may I remind everybody of the necessity to keep an eye on those following up behind. This.was the subject of my nasty notice no. 2. and nobody appears to have taken any notice. A few weeks ago I was out with the club and an accident occurred. I turned round to see if we were being followed up to find nobody in sight at all. Signalling the leader to halt, we waited a couple of minutes and finally the duty member was seen to be running trying to catch us. It appared that one of the girls had slipped and in doing so had hit her head on a stone and was flat out. As it happened we were within hailing distance of the tea place and Fred was there with his car. But I can't help thinking what might have been the situation otherwise. So please, please , look behind you.
·
ANNUAL OUTING TO THE SEA
This year we are going to Broadstairs. We will catch the 10.40 a.m. train
at Victoria Station. · Seats will be reserved on the train and the fare should be a little cheaper as we are getting a group ticket. Please be at the ticket office by 10.15 a.m. as we have to count the number going on the group ticket and then queue up for it!
TENNIS
Dennis Spiller is willing to organise tennis on Friday evenings at either Bunhill Fields or Regents Park - for anyone who is interested. Please contact Dennis.
AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY
Richard Sumner is prepared to organise a YHA weekend at Salisbury. If anyone is interested, will they please contact him, IN GOOD TIME.
SCHOOL FLOOR
This has been sanded and re-varnished. Father Higgs asks that we wear soft shoes for dancing and if possible not to wear black rubber heeled shoes at all.
NEWS ITEMS
WiII newly engaged, marrieds and proud mothers and fathers, please send in their happy news to the hon. sec. It is rather difficult trying to keep track of
them all! To anybody who has been missed out on previous lists, congrats.
ard best wishes.
Father John Baptist is unable to get his book cheap for us since he no longer lives at Forest Gate where he was librarian. So please obtain your own. It is called "For AII Men', published By Johni Tdd @ 21/-.
John Lawrence replaces Bill McCarthy as Treasurer. Please help him to sort out the muddle left behind by his predecessor by filling in the form, sending the necessary money (where applicable). and returning it(or them) as soon as possible. We would 1ike to take this opportunity of thanking Alan Rowe who has been Helping to get the records straight before handing over the books to John; he had a very difficult task, ·
Last but not by any means least could we start thinking about the A.G,M. PeopIe are rather put off by being told they must come in every Tuesday, or they must go out every Sunday and so on. Obviously this would be an imposition. Meetings take place roughly bi-monthly, work is shared around the committee but apart from the Secretary and Treasurer, is not in the least arduous. I would like to suggest that it is not very fair to be always taking something out of the club but never putting anything into it, somebody has to organise events, Won't you? Just for one year?: It is very satisfying to give.
WHATS IN A-NAME?
It has reached my ears that lack of support for the Central European
and Progresstve Dancing was because many members were put off by the rather grabliose titles and that had the Committee titled these simply as Scuare Dancing, we would have had the usual numbers.
Frankly, if this reaIIy is true, I've never heard of anything so silly!
The first mentioned dance was extremely interesting, if exhausting. The second was enormous fun, we haven't heard so much laughter in the club for months. It was quite the most enjoyable evening for a long time.
(b) Judging by the very poor turnout for the retreat (only 66) and also by some of the comments I received before this event, a number of people who normally go along were put off by my title of "witched-on retreat" expecting gimmicks.
Dear, dear, that was too bad. As a result, these missed the best retreat the club has had for years (if further comments are to be believed). Titles can be misleading, you should take your chance, and get an agreeable surprise!
HINTS TO NEWCOMERS
All too often we see ramblers out in ordinary shoes with the usual thin soles.
Now, rambler's gear is very expensive and to the novice it is difficult to decide on one's priorities. so let us offer some practical advice.
(a) Most important item, taking precedence over anything else, is BOOTS, Some boots are made for walkin', some are not! If you can't afford a pair of boots fit for the nobs, then you could do a lot worse than to buy Big T TUF boots (in any shoe shop for 79/-), Remember to take two pairs of socks with you, one thin and one thick, when trying these boots on.
You may be able to walk about comfortably in Hush Puppies all day, but they won't keep out the ·wet for long; and England's climate being what it is, the ground is more often wet than dry. We don't walk on pavements all the time, you know. We go through long, wet grass, farm-yard muck, muddy lanes, not to mention but a few delights. Go, apart from the mechanics of keeping your feet dry, do you really want to ruin your Hush Puppies?

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC RAMBLERS' CLUB
16th May 1969
Dear Members,
Bill McCarthy has had to give up the office of Club Treasurer, and I have just taken over from himto look after the Club affairs until the Annual General Meeting.
I regret that some of the records have been mislaid, and I should like your help in building these up again.
If we have a record of receiving your subscription you will either have already had your receipt, or it will be enclosed with this letter. If you have paid your subscription and have not had a receipt, would you please complete the relevant section below. Many subscriptions have still not been paid, and I should be glad if these could be sent to me as soon as possible. According to the Club rules, if a subscription has not been paid by 31st December, membership is deemed to have lapsed. I am sure that all those who have not paid have probably just forgotten and will send them as soon as possible.
Our records of the Dinner and Dance are in a bit of a muddle, and if you attended this function could you please also complete the relevant section below, and return as soon as possible.
It is very difficult to pick up the threads half way through the year and I am sure that you will give me all the help you can.
