Obituary to Dorothy Hickman

Dorothy

The name means ‘Gift of God’

I think it says it all

Our parents met in a rambling club so we learnt from an early age to love and enjoy the countryside.

Towards the end of the war we were evacuated with our mother to a farm in Staffordshire as we lived close to Fighter Command headquarters in Stanmore.

Here we ran wild for a glorious six weeks enjoying the farm animals and the lovely countryside.

Dorothy did very well at school and went on to get a BSc in what was then Chelsea Polytechnic.  She then went on to Liverpool University where she got a masters in computer science.  She worked in the Ministry of Defence before moving to Mott McDonald as a computer programmer.  I think she was head hunted at one stage.

She loved walking and fell walking in the Lake District and the Alps.  One particularly enjoyable holiday was to Swedish Lapland which travelled by train crossing the Arctic Circle on the way.

After retiring Dorothy led many holidays and walks for the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Ramblers Club

After retiring Dorothy lead many holidays and walks for the St Francis of Assisi Club.  She was meticulous in her preparation for these, even checking the time of sunset so they get back before dark.

As well as the St Francis Club she was a member of the Ascent Group and the English Catholic History Association.  She also volunteered for ‘Live at Home’
a Methodist charity which supported the housebound. I

In conclusion I want to thank everyone who helped us at this difficult time.

I have added the bit about the Methodist as not many people know that ‘Live at Home’ is a Methodist charity.
Best wishes,
