On Corpus Christi 08 06 23 Maurice Hickman led a walk to view the famous carpet of flowers at Arundel Cathedral. So far I have not received any photographs taken on the day but on the day before the carpet could be viewed in perfect condition as people were not allowed to walk on it that day.

Above is Arundel Castle often referred to as a fairy tale castle because of its enchanting appearance. It is the ancestral home of the family of the Duke of Norfolk, the most senior Catholic Layman in the UK, who organises coronations of UK Monarchs. the Cathedral is opposite the castle and originally was the parish Church of the Dukes of Norfolk. It was named as the Church  of Our Lady and St Philip Neri but when the ancestor of the Duke of Norfolk was canonised it was changed to the Church of Our Lady and St Philip Howard. Then when the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton was created in 1960 the then Duke of Norfolk made it available for use as the Cathedral.

The tradition of laying the carpet Carpet of Flowers goes back 150 years to 1873. There is a different theme every year and next is te 2023 version which, being in the year of the coronation of King Charles III has a touch of royal flavour.

Having visited the carpet of flowers there is a pleasant walk on the bank of the river Arun to the Black Rabbit Pub which serves good lunchtime food and provides tables outside by the river
