On the weekend of 8 - 9 September 1990, Barbara Deubzer hosted a splendid rambling weekend based in her B&B in Portland Road, East Grinstead. She had suggested the weekend at the lunchstop on the Ranmore walk earlier in the year and had reserved her entire acommodation for members of the club for that weekend. Most of the photographs below were taken with my fairly primitive Kodak Instamatic Camera but I am indebted to Anne Alcock for a few better quality ones.

The above photograph shows Barbara in her "office" from where she ran her B&B in a most efficient manner.

On Saturday 8 September Barbara led us on a delightful ramble on which she introduced us to

At that time East Grinstead became a favoured area for rambles and we were always accompanied by Barbara's dog "Ben" who entertained us with his enthusiasm for chasing sticks when we threw them for him. Here he is seen eagerly waiting for the throw.

On the Saturday evening Barbara organised a Bar B Que in which we all took turns maning thge Bar B Que. Here Terry is taking his turn

This was Helen (Callingham) who was a regular weekly walker at that time and also took her turn at the Bar B Que

The Bar B Que ended with a sing song inside the house and as most of us had met on the  Arundel and Brighton Walking Pilgrimage the favourite pilgrim songs were sung. Our musical accompanist did not like the pilgrims' lively version of the Glastonbury Song (preferring the more usual dirge-like pace) and took some persuasion to continue accompanying the singing.

The Sunday walk wasalso led by Barbara and she intruduced us to the Cat Inn in West Hoathly which at that time was a favourite venue for walkers but in later years the management turned against ramblers and refused to entertain us for lunch stops. In the end we benefited from the Cat Inn ban because we discovered a lovely pub nearby at Vinors Cross which was much more rambler friendly and had a very reasonably priced menu.

Below are some photographs taken at the Cat.

In the afternoon we visited an ancient rock formation near West Hoathly and the ramblers enjoyed scrambling up them. I got these happy photographs to remind me of the occasion

Terry in his more athletic years!!

In the evening we visited the National Trust site at Standen and I got this photograph of the late lamented Pat entertaining us with her description of "The Flight of a Bumble Bee"!!

And as evening approached we got good views of East Grinstead which brought an excellent weekent to a close.
