Mary Lowe (née Curran) was a founder member of the club. We are forever indebted to her and the other founder members for their initiative in bringing into existence the Club from which we have derived so much benefit over more than 80 years, The founder members were regular attenders at Mass in St Mary Moorfields and when Mary Married her husband Captain Paddy Lowe the ceremony was held in St Mary's and the reception in the crypt where we have enjoyed so many social occasions.

As an obituary to Mary I feel I can do no better than reproduce the letter sent to the club by her fellow founding member Margaret Morgan on the occasion of Mary's death on 26 February 1978.

The letter dated 2/3/78 read as follows,

Dear Mary,

You will be sorry to hear that my dear friend, and co-founder of the club, died on Sunday (R.I.P). Mary had been spending the day with her daughter, for the baptism of a new grandchild, and collapsed, after lunch, with a stroke, from which she never regained consciousness and she died at 8 pm.

Apart from the terrible shock to her family, it was a wonderful death for her. I have known and loved her for over fifty years and she valued her independence very highly, and remained alert and active to the end - this was as she would have wanted.

I was particularly pleased that she had joined the Arundel pilgrimage, which she enjoyed immensely. The Club has meant so much to her and it has been so gratifying to both of us to know that it still flourishes.

Mary then went on to give details of the arrangements for the Requiem Mass on Saturday 4th March.

A separate unsigned note clipped together with Margaret's letter records that many old members of the club were present (at the Mass) including the other co-founder Margaret Morgan.

RIP
