June joined the club in 1980, some three years after her husband Richard. Unfortunately Richard died in membership year 2003/04 and June died on the Feast of Epiphany 2018.  I first met them on walks led by Richard in the early 1990s and a more pleasant and friendly couple one could not imagine.

Some memmbers of the club attended June's funeral Mass on Thursday 11 February 2018 and below I reproduce the Order of Service lovingly arranged by June's Niece Emma and other family members.

Opening Hymn

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways,
Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence praise,

In deeper reverence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard,
Beside the Syrian sea,

The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow Thee,
Rise up and follow Thee.

  • Sabbath rest by Galilee,
    o calm of hills above,

Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee,
The silence of eternity,
Interpreted by love,
Interpreted by love.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace,

The beauty of Thy peace.

Breathe through the hearts of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,

  • still small voice of calm,
  • still small voice of calm.

The First Reading
Book ofIsaiah 25: 6-9
read by ] emima Woods

On this mountain, the Lord Almighty will prepare

A feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine,
the best of meats and finest of wines.

On this mountain, he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
The sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever.

The sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces;
He will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth.

The Lord has spoken.

In that day they will say, "Surely this is our God.

We trusted in him, and he saved us.

This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."

This is the word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

The Responsorial Psalm
(sung)

The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want,
He makes me down to lie

In pastures green, He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

My soul he doth restore again,
and me to walk doth make
within the paths of righteousness,
e'en for His own name's sake.

Yea though I walk through death's dark vale
yet will I fear no ill;

For thou art with me, and thy rod
and staff me comfort still.

My table Thou has furnished
in presence of my foes;

my head thou dost with oil anoint,
and my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life
shall surely follow me;

And in God's house for evermore
my dwelling-place shall be.

Second Reading

from King George VI's Christmas message, 1937
read by Charlotte Woods

'And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,
"Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown."

And he replied "Go out into the darkness
And put your hand into the hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.'"

Sr John 14: 1-6

Offertory Hymn

Love divine all loves excelling,
Joy ofheav'n, to earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,
Enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighry to deliver,
Let us all thy life receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more thy temple leave.

Finish then thy new creation,
Pure and sinless let us be;
Let us see thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in thee.

Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before thee,
Lost in wonder, love and praise.

Communion Hymn

Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
The Holy one, is here.

Come bow before him now,
With reverence and fear.

In him no sin is found,
We stand on Holy Ground.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
The Holy one, is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around;

He burns with holy fire,
With splendour he is crowned.

How awesome is the sight,
Our radiant king of light.

Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around.

Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place.

He comes to cleanse and heal,
To minster his grace.

No work too hard for him,
In faith receive from him;

Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place.

Recessional Hymn

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide:

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide;
When other helpers fail, and comforts Bee,
Help of the helpless, 0 abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see:

  • thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need thy presence ev'ry passing hour:

What but they grace can foil the tempter's power?

Who like thyself my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, Lord abide with me.

I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.

Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies:

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows Bee;
In life, in death, 0 Lord abide with me.
